What are the standard golf headcover sizes?
Headcovers are not sold in small, medium and large. They are sold by club type, because each club head has its own shape and volume. These are the dimensions we build our leather covers to, and they are the industry norm.

Notice what is missing from that table: brand names. You do not need a "TaylorMade headcover" for a TaylorMade driver. Heads are built to the same legal ceiling, so a properly sized driver cover fits them all.
Will a driver headcover fit my 460cc driver?
Yes. Under the Equipment Rules, a conforming driver head cannot exceed 460cc (plus a small measurement tolerance), and it is capped at 5 inches heel to toe. That ceiling has been in place since 2004, which is why "460cc" appears on almost every driver sold today.
The practical upshot: a 13" x 6.5" driver cover is built for the biggest head the rules allow. If yours is an older 400cc or 420cc head, it still fits, it just sits with a little more room. The only clubs that give a driver cover trouble are non-conforming long-drive heads and a handful of chunky adjustable hosels, and even those usually slide in fine.

Do fairway wood and hybrid covers fit any club?
Within their own category, yes. A 12" x 5" fairway cover swallows a 3 wood, a 5 wood, a 7 wood and a 9 wood without complaint. A 9" x 3.8" hybrid cover fits hybrids and rescue clubs across the brands.
What you cannot do is mix categories. Golfers try it constantly and it never ends well:
- Fairway cover on a hybrid. Too loose. It falls off in the bag, usually somewhere around the 4th tee, and you find it two rounds later.
- Hybrid cover on a fairway wood. Too tight. You stretch the seam every time you pull the club, and the stitching eventually gives up.
- Fairway cover on a driver. It will not go on. Please stop trying.
Buy the size that matches the club and the cover stays put on a bumpy cart path, which is the entire point.
The price is wrong if you are still playing with the covers your clubs came in.

Blade or mallet: which putter cover do I need?
Look at the head, not the label. If it is a slim, traditional shape (an Anser style, a Newport, most Scotty Cameron classics), you need a blade cover. If it is a big, wide, high MOI head (a Spider, an Odyssey Seven, a 2 Ball), you need a mallet cover, sized around 5.5" x 4.9" x 1.3".
One extra check: a small number of mallets are unusually long front to back. If your putter head is deeper than about 5 inches from face to back rail, measure it before you order. Otherwise, mallet is mallet.

How do I measure my clubs for a headcover?
Ninety-nine times out of a hundred you do not need to. Buy by club type and you are done. If you have an unusual head and want to be certain, it takes about a minute:
- Height: stand the club on its sole and measure from the ground to the top of the crown. Your cover needs to be at least this tall, and driver covers give you 13 inches to play with.
- Width: measure heel to toe across the widest point. A legal driver cannot exceed 5 inches here, so a 6.5 inch opening is comfortable.
- Depth: measure face to back. This is the one that matters for oversized mallet putters.
Then compare against the table above. If your numbers fit inside the cover, it fits.
Should I buy a set or single covers?
Buy a set if you want the bag to look intentional. Matching driver, wood, hybrid and putter covers is the difference between "I bought some headcovers" and "this is my bag". Sets are also cheaper per cover than buying five singles one at a time.
Buy singles if you are protecting one club (usually the driver, which takes the most abuse in a crowded bag) or if you want one loud novelty cover as a talking point next to an otherwise sober set.

Are golf headcovers one size fits all?
No. Headcovers are sized by club type. Driver covers (13" x 6.5") fit any conforming driver, but a driver cover will not fit a hybrid and a hybrid cover will not fit a fairway wood. Within a club type, one size does fit essentially all brands.
Do I need a special headcover for a TaylorMade or Callaway driver?
No. Driver heads are capped at 460cc by the rules of golf, so any correctly sized driver cover fits TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping, Cobra, Mizuno and everything else on the rack.
What size headcover fits a 3 wood?
A fairway wood cover, roughly 12" x 5". The same cover fits 5, 7 and 9 woods. Do not use a hybrid cover on a 3 wood, it will stretch and split.
Will a mallet cover fit my blade putter?
It will go on, but it will be loose and it will fall off. Blade putters need a blade cover, which is cut narrow and long. Mallet covers are cut wide for high MOI heads.
How many headcovers does a golfer actually need?
Most bags need four: driver, fairway wood, hybrid and putter. Add a second wood or hybrid cover if you carry a 5 wood or two rescues. Irons and wedges do not take headcovers in normal play.
